Karen McDonald Receives Support from the Michigan Education Association for Attorney General Campaign

OAKLAND COUNTY, MICH. – Today, Karen McDonald, the Oakland County Prosecutor who has defined her career by fighting for families and kids, has been recommended by the Michigan Education Association in her campaign for Michigan Attorney General.

Support from the state’s largest school employee union comes following a strong fall – McDonald reported raising nearly $1 million in the last fundraising period, received the endorsements and declarations of support from EMILY’s List, the Council of Baptist Pastors of Detroit & Vicinity, UA Local 85, and Detroit Plumbers 98, and UFCW Local 876, among others, and released polling showing McDonald was the only Democratic candidate for Attorney General leading the Republicans outside the margin of error.

“As someone who began my career as a teacher, I’m incredibly grateful to receive the support from the Michigan Education Association to be our next Attorney General,” said McDonald. “As a former union member, I know how critical it is that we have a leader willing to enforce our labor laws, fight against unfair attacks on workers and make sure Michigan is a state where workers are always treated with respect in the workplace.”

About Karen McDonald: Karen was elected Oakland County Prosecutor in 2020 and is committed to protecting victims of crime, improving outcomes for juveniles and families, and increasing fairness across the criminal justice system. Karen’s early initiatives have included reviewing the files of every pending juvenile lifer case in Oakland County, and establishing a Trafficking Unit, a Hate Crimes Unit, and a Conviction Integrity Unit. Prior to her election as Oakland County Prosecutor, Karen was an Oakland County Circuit Court judge from 2012 to 2019. As a judge, Karen specialized in family matters – including divorce and custody, child abuse and neglect, and adoption.

Karen began her career as a high school English teacher in Midland where she was a proud union member. Her experience teaching sparked her lifelong commitment to kids. Karen was raised in Portland, Michigan, alongside her two sisters. She now lives in Birmingham with her husband. Together they raised five children.
